This exhibition highlights the artist’s personal and social engagement with painting for over two decades. Several of the selected works are on exhibit for the first time.
“We need to know where we have been: to know where we are going” (Jennifer Delos Reyes, social art theorist). This statement fuels much of the purpose and context for this retrospective at this moment in the artist’s career. With so much media emphasis on the ‘new’, this exhibition self-consciously provides a perspective from which to view her current work today.
“Drawing on personal and specific conditions of existence in which I find myself, these paintings refer to modern pop culture within a romantic and formalist approach to painting. The act and process of painting become part of the intention of the work. The result, a poetic and unexpected transformation of the idea.” -Anne-Marie Cosgrove
The exhibition opens in Toronto on Wednesday, April 14th (W/TH/F/SA 11:00 - 6:00 and SUN 11:00 - 5:00 or by appointment).

Anne-Marie Cosgrove holds a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal and an MFA from York University in Toronto. Her work can be seen at the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) 2009 Annual in Seattle, Washington from November 19, 2009 to February 6, 2010. She has exhibited her paintings in a number of solo and group exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington, DC and has received numerous awards from the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council. Her work is represented in many private and corporate collections including York University and the Clarica Corporation.

“Words are integral to what I do. I come to my visual perceptions through language; the subject of my work loosely framed within an ongoing dialogue between the articulation of surface and the politics of existence in which I find myself. These are experiments in painting; manifestations of grapplings between the conscious (ego and desire) and the unconscious or the meditative (serendipity and chance). The moment reassessed through the language of painting; the element of the poetic and the lyrical reaffirmed by the gesture and the line.”

Seattle, Washington, November 6, 2009 The Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) announces its 20th Annual juried exhibition, featuring the work of 15 artists chosen from over 200 submissions from around the world by Jess Van Nostrand, Exhibitions Curator at Cornish College of the Arts.

With an eclectic mix of both emerging and established artists working in a variety of media, the exhibit showcases the ways in which contemporary art continues to experiment by balancing representation with abstraction, often through references to current events, popular culture, and political turmoil.

The over-arching pattern of a world reeling from environmental and cultural change is evident throughout the exhibit, demonstrating that the concerns of artists from such widely separated areas as Australia, Canada, and both coasts of the United States are deeply shared.

Selected artists include Robyn Base (Australia), Nelson Bradley (NY), Anne-Marie Cosgrove (Ontario), Derek Coté (TN), Thea Autustina Eck (PA), Sally Finch (OR), Valerie George (CA), Kim Hennessey (MA), Klaus Knoll and Cella (HI), Zane Lancaster (UT), Nate Larson (MD) and Marni Shindelman (NY), Mario Marzan (NC), Leigh Merill (TX), Patrick Moser(FL), and Yvone Petkus (KY).

The show opens Thursday, November 19 (6 - 9p), at CoCA's Ballard location at 6413 Seaview Ave NW as well as at CoCA's Belltown gallery, located at 1st and Clay, and will remain on display through February 6, 2010. A catalog of the exhibition, with an essay by juror Jess Van Nostrand, will be available at the opening and online as part of CoCA's new book series.

Preparing to enter its 30th year, CoCA serves as a catalyst and forum for the advancement, development and understanding of contemporary art.
